NOTEBOOK: Sidewalk coming to West Ridge from Adamson to Birchland

It’s great to read that city staff will be installing a sidewalk along West Ridge Drive between Adamson and Birchland.  It’s a one-block stretch of road adjacent to a park that happens to be the only segment of that part of West Ridge without a sidewalk.  Not sure planners missed that one, but good see it’s being fixed.

Fernbank farm owner asks for public’s help to find possible arsonists

Joni Sabourin and her family own 200 acres farmland on Fernbank Road, immediately west of Deer Run and West Ridge.  On Sunday, firefighters responded to a brush fire on her property that she believes was deliberately set.

The fire on Sunday was quickly contained, damaging some hay and a large Manitoba maple tree.  Sabourin tells StittsvilleCentral.ca that trespassing and vandalism on the property is a frequent concern.

She posted the following note to the Stittsville Neighbours Facebook group today:

Hi Neighbours, yesterday we had a large fire in our hay field/forest area directly behind Birchland Street (Westridge Area). When the firefighters arrived on site they came across a number of kids running away from the scene.

This is the third incident we have had on the property, which could have been extremely dangerous for the homeowners on Birchland, as well as our farm property. There is NO access to fire hydrants and water had to be trucked in using special equipment.

If you have any information or have seen any of these kids entering the private property yesterday, please contact the Ottawa Police referencing Case # 17-122879.

We have a huge amount of clean-up to do along with approximately 1 km of ruts to fix, due to all the fire trucks accessing from Fernbank. I would like the kids responsible to help with the clean up. Maybe a bit of hard work will ensure they learn their lesson. Please talk to your kids. This could have been extremely serious if the fields had been dry. Thank you.
