Do you like to sing? Would you like to become a better singer? Would you like to learn to read music? Would you like to do all of this, AND make new friends in the community at the same time? Then the GJS invites you to try out the GJS choir, risk-free during the month of September!

The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers (GJS) is a non-auditioned community choir organization, offering a wide variety of musical and social experiences.  There are ensembles for Adults (SATB), Teens (SATB), and Children (SSA). All three groups rehearse on Wednesday evenings, in Stittsville. Each choir performs on its own in the community, and we also perform together. This inter-generational focus is unique in the community! Continue reading

Goulbourn Jubilee Singers travel to Austria and the Czech Republic

(press release)

This month, thirty members of the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers (GJS), an area community mixed-voice choir founded in 1977, will be performing a Canadian-based repertoire in various venues in Austria and the Czech Republic.

Under the direction of Linda Crawford and with the accompaniment of Bonnie MacDiarmid, the choir will sing in the Cantus Salisburgensis Festival and will perform additional concerts in Salzburg, Melk Abbey and Prague.

On July 8, the choir will perform at the Festival’s main venue, the Mozarteum, Salzburg’s University for Music and the Dramatic Arts, sharing the stage with a youth choir from Prince Edward County.

Other performances in Salzburg include a noon-time concert at the Hohesalzburg (Salzburg Castle) and a performance of Mozart’s Missa Solemnis at the Salzburg Cathedral with the cathedral choir.

The GJS will also perform at Melk Abbey in the Abbey Church, and will sing a Friendship Concert in Prague with Cantarina, their host choir.

Choir director Linda Crawford said she is pleased on two counts. Not only will the choir introduce so many Canadian-composed-and-arranged pieces to European audiences, they will also sing some of the best liturgical pieces ever written. She said that a highlight will be singing the Missa Solemnis in the Cathedral for which Mozart wrote the piece and where it had its debut in 1780. She added that the choir is working very hard and taking additional practices to perform their best.

The choir will be on tour from July 6 to 15.

About the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers
The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers is the longest established choir in the west end of Ottawa with members ranging in age from 8 to 80.   The adult choir was established in 1977, the children’s choir, Junior Jubilees, in 2000, and the teen choir in 2014.   These non-auditioned choirs accept singers of all musical abilities. We are a fun-loving group of folks who come together to sing and enjoy social activities.  If you share a love of music and good times, consider joining the Junior Jubilees, the GJ Teens or Goulbourn Jubilee Singers. Practices are every Wednesday night at Stittsville United Church. To learn more about the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers, visit http://gjsingers.com, or check us out on Facebook.

On Thursday night, junior members of the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers will be performing music from A Charlie Brown Christmas with the Jerry Granelli Trio.  Guaraldi wrote and recorded the soundtrack with his trio for the 1965 Charlie Brown movie that’s considered by many to be one of the greatest Christmas albums of all time.

Granelli is the only remaining member of Guaraldi’s original trio, and he’s performing tonight at Dominion-Chalmers United Church in an event produced by the Ottawa Jazz Festival. StittsvilleCentral.ca recently talked to Linda Crawford, the artistic director for the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers, about the upcoming performance.
