Saturday night’s Cinema Under the Stars event, hosted by the Stittsville Village Association, brought out over a hundred families to Village Square Park.  The event raised over $500 for the Stittsville Food Bank.  Photos by Barry Gray.

Rainy weather and park fees spoil plans for Stittsville farmers’ market

Despite having strong community support, the Ottawa Farmers’ Market (OFM) couldn’t muster enough vendor support for a market in Stittsville this year to make economic sense.

But the president of the OFM said that they will try again next year.

“We are still open to looking at this as a future possibility,” Greer Knox told StittsvilleCentral.ca on Wednesday. “We’re all disappointed.” Continue reading

PHOTOS: Opening day for Market at the Barn

Friday evening was opening day for Market at the Barn, a mini farmers’ market at the old barn next to Village Square Park.  Barn owner Suzanne Bird plans to hold the event every Friday this summer from 4pm to 7pm.  All photos by Barry Gray.

The sky was overcast but spirits were bright on Sunday for the annual Arts in the Park event, presented by the Stittsville Village Association. Over 90 vendors participated this year in a vibrant display of art, music, food, books, gardening, theatre, history and lots more!

UPDATE: Committee approves re-zoning for farmers’ market

Good news: The City of Ottawa’s Planning Committee unanimously approved re-zoning for Village Square Park that will allow for a farmers’ market to operate starting this June.

Leading up to the meeting, city staff received 15 comments from the public about the re-zoning, with all in favour except for one. That may not sound like a lot of feedback, but it’s actually quite high for a relatively benign zoning change. Continue reading

NOTEBOOK: New zoning required for farmers’ market at Village Square

Who knew starting up a farmers’ market would be so complicated?

The Ottawa Farmers’ Market — the group that runs the weekly market at Lansdowne Park — wants to bring a weekly market to Stittsville starting this spring. The plan is to bring a Friday market to Village Square Park (corner of Stittsville Main & Abbott) that would run from 12:00pm-6:00pm from June to October.

Let’s take out the crystal ball and look ahead at what 2017 may have in store for Stittsville…

CANADIAN TIRE CENTRE
Earlier this year we should hear from the Ottawa Senators about what they have in mind for Canadian Tire Centre once the Sens leave for Lebreton Flats. Last year, team owner Eugene Melnyk teased that the development would be an “entertainment-driven” transformation.  Whatever it is, any change will have a major impact on Stittsville and Kanata for jobs, transportation and economic development. The final fundraising tally for last week’s 9RunRun won’t be available until November but the attendance numbers are encouraging. Organizer Brenda Tirrell says that combined, the three races had about 1700 registrants, up by about 400 from last year’s race. Continue reading

LETTER: Gazebo funding isn’t a conflict of interest

Re: How the City is paying for a gazebo at Village Square Park

Your recent article reports on a new $105,000 gazebo for Village Square Park. Part of the funding for the gazebo ($30,000) is coming from Waste Management through a Community Initiatives Fund (CIF). At the same time Waste Management is negotiations with the City to develop a new Host Municipality Agreement for the new landfill at their Carp Road facility. Continue reading

Councillor Shad Qadri recently revealed details about a gazebo being built at Village Square Park, at the corner of Stittsville Main and Abbott. The plan is to build a 16’x16′ raised stage at the east end of the park with electrical hook-ups, for use as a community performance space. The structure is already under construction and could be completed as early as November 1. Continue reading

Arts in the Park rescheduled for August 14

This year’s Arts in the Park has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 14 from noon to 5pm.  

The Stittsville Village Association (SVA) presents the annual Arts in the Park exhibition. More than 60 professional and amateur artists, writers, culinary specialists, musicians, and other creators will bring their work to Village Square Park (Stittsville Main at Abbott Street) for an afternoon of cultural appreciation and enjoyment.

In addition to the showcase of art, high end crafts, and literary works, the SVA endeavours to provide a variety of other activities, including performances, special activities for children and youth, and fundraising snack sales.

Arts in the Park returns on June 5

We were getting lunch at Quitters, when an OC Transpo bus stopped next door. Out came a wedding party, who walked over to Village Square Park and stopped in front of the old log house for some photos. (Photo courtesy of J. Baillie)

UPDATE: The bride and groom are Sarah and Trevor Kennedy. Sarah writes: “I happen to be the very lucky bride in that photo. My handsome groom Trevor Kennedy is a real prince. Thanks for all the great thoughts and comments! We had an amazing, unforgettable day. BEST day of our lives. Didn’t my girls rock those outfits?”

This pic was posted to Stittsville Neighbours on Saturday afternoon and within a few hours has over 200 likes, which is likely the most popular photo ever on the group.
