You know you are a serious gardener when you’re planning for planting season while it’s -15 and snow is falling. Here’s a note from the volunteers at Jo-Jo’s Community Garden on Stittsville Main Street.
Any resident interested in having a garden plot and wants to grow your own organic vegetables next year, we can take you on!
We are working on developing Phase 2 for this spring. This new area will have a special focus on helping community members who have accessibility concerns. There is so much available space (Thanks to Jo-Jo’s Pizzeria) that we will also be able to add on more regular garden plots for any new members (similar to what we currently have in Phase 1) depending on community interest.
Plot sizes range from 10×20 – $60, 10×10 – $45, 5×10 – $35 & 5×5 – $25. This fee is to cover water costs. The garden is all volunteer and non profit.
Like last year, we plan to have a lot of fun things for kids. We already have the insect hotel and the kids sunflower garden. We are working on a plan to have an enchanted exploring garden for them. We can’t spill all the beans on this project yet, but it will be really fun. The idea is to have the child explore while their parent tends to their garden plot.
Gardening benefits us not only by giving us great food, but it can help a person physically (daily exercise), mentally (sense of accomplishment) and socially (meeting new friends with something in common to talk about).
