The annual ‘Come Try Ringette’, hosted by the West Ottawa Ringette Association (WORA) took place this weekend with an incredible 47 kids participating. The afternoon gave the chance for kids aged four and up and their parents to learn more about the game of ringette. Each participant received a WORA grab bag for taking part.
The kids learned the basics and played some scrum games. The WORA players and coaches were there to teach the skills and lead those participating in the fun. President of WORA, Chris Ellison, was “thrilled to see so many kids come out for the afternoon”.
Ringette is a genuine team sport that encourages all players to reach maximum participation while teaching the skills to work together as a team. In the game, the ring is passed to each team mate as they pass the blue line – no player can keep the ring while skating from one end of the rink to the other. No ‘ring hogging’ is allowed. Also, the kids are placed on teams that match their playing abilities – presenting a fairer game.

When asked about the upcoming Canadian Ringette Championships and WORA’s involvement, Chris told us, “WORA will be involved in the Canadian Ringette Championships as far as volunteering and will also have players from West Ottawa playing in championships also.”
The West Ottawa Ringette Association is hosting the Provincial ‘A’ Championships here in Stittsville from March 19 – 22, 2020 at the Cardel-Rec Recreation Complex-Goulbourn. Teams making up WORA are from Richmond, Stittsville, Kanata, Carp and Kinburn.
Come out to support and cheer for our local teams and take in the action-packed game of Ringette.
I’m helping a friend with outreach for raffle items, donations, sponsorships for an evening on Feb. 7 to raise funds for the Canadian Ringette Championships. If any local businesses in Kanata, Stittsville or anywhere in Ottawa can help with donating raffle prizes, every donation, no matter the value, is truly valued. https://www.ringette.ca/events/canadian-ringette-championships/. If you wish to donate email Janet at janet.luxton@gmail.com.
