South Carleton High School was briefly under a “Shelter in Place” status this morning after a bear was spotted near the school.
“A community member contacted us and Richmond Public to indicate a bear had been sighted near the Jock River earlier this morning,” principal Colin Anderson told StittsvilleCentral.ca.
“This is, as far as I can tell, not a common event, but not unprecedented at suburban schools. Certainly the first in my two years here. I remember ones at Earl of March and at Bell when I was there years ago, and we had several at West Carleton (which is much more rural) when I was principal there,” he said.
South Carleton is now in "Shelter in Place". Students and staff are not to leave the building. A bear has been spotted in the vicinity.

The "Shelter in Place" has been lifted. Please do not leave school property. There may still be a bear in the area.

All clear. The area appears to be free of bears. Thanks for bearing with us.
