This coming week is exciting for Stittsville volunteers who have been nominated for the 2021 Stittsville Volunteer Awards and are so worthy of recognition. Councillor Gower is honoured to recognize such a group of dedicated people. Each has participated in our community by generously giving of their time for the benefit of others. Make sure you join the celebration!
Councillor Gower also updates residents on vaccines; prevention of theft in the community with tips from the Ottawa Police; Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus; and, his rationale and more background on the Porsche dealership plan. He also would like you to mark your calendar for his upcoming virtual Councillor Chat and an Urban Cycling/EnviroCentre virtual workshop.

Vaccine update
To date, more than 520,000 doses of vaccines have been administered in Ottawa and more than 60% per cent of Ottawa residents 18 years and older have received at least one dose.
Visit the OPH Covid-19 Vaccination page to learn who can currently get the COVID-19 vaccine and check out COVID-19 in Ottawa for the latest updates.
Preventing theft in our community
Last week we heard several reports about thefts in different neighbourhoods over the weekend – bikes, scooters, and items stolen from vehicles.
Some tips from Ottawa Police about what you can do to prevent crime in our community:
- Report any thefts or suspicious activity in your community: http://ottawapolice.ca/report/ or call 613-236-1222 ext 7300
- Before you head to bed, check to make sure your garage door is locked, your car doors are locked, and your bikes are secure.
- Remove any valuables and shopping bags from view in your car. This includes loose change and electronic devices such as Ipods, cell phones and GPS navigation systems.
- Register your bike with 529 Garage to help recover your bike if it gets stolen.
- Consider organizing a Neighbourhood Watch for your street. This program has been successful in many communities to proactively prevent crime.
Mosquitoes & West Nile Virus
The mosquitoes are out there this spring! Each year from June to October, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) coordinates a WNV prevention program, which includes surveillance of the illness in humans, surveillance of mosquitoes, and treating water in storm water catch basins and certain surface water sites against mosquito larvae. To learn more about the treatment program, and how you can reduce mosquitoes on your property, click here…
About that Porsche dealership
Last week City Council approved a Montreal Road Community Improvement Plan application to support a $17-million investment in an auto dealership in Vanier. Increased property taxes for the redeveloped site are anticipated to deliver more than $970,000 in additional net tax revenue to the City in the first 10 years, and more than $5 million in the subsequent decade. I’ve had a lot of questions about this one so I’ve shared some background and my rationale on my web site. Read more…
