(The Ottawa Fallen Firefighters Memorial at 200 Lett Street in Ottawa.)
This year’s Memorial returns virtually on Sunday Sept. 12, 2021, at the Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa and and marks the 20th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York. The service will be live-streamed at National Firefighters Memorial. One Hundred and Twenty-Four names of the fallen will be sketched on the Memorial Wall this year, among those 1700 names already included of fallen firefighters from across Canada and the territories, dating back to the late 1800s. The annual National Firefighters Memorial draws hundreds of firefighters from each of the provinces and territories who attend the ceremony in a show of solidarity and commemoration.
On September 10, the 20th Annual Firefighters Memorial will be held at Marion Dewar Place, Ottawa City Hall, at 12:00 noon. Ottawa firefighters who have lost their lives this past year will be recognized at the ceremony with a tribute. Active, retired and rural firefighters and families are invited to attend. The ceremony will commemorate the ‘Line of Duty’ deaths and the ‘Legacy of Courage’ recognition. Visit the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation facebook page to learn more.
The Toronto Professional Firefighter Celtic Society (TPFFCS) have embarked on a bike ride from Hamilton to Ottawa (575 Kms) no matter what the weather. The firefighters participating are from Hamilton, Oakville, Markham, Whitby, Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, and Stephenville, Nfld. The Toronto Professional Firefighter Celtic Society ride has grown every year in participation numbers and in tributes to their fallen comrades.
The purpose of the ride is to raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF), which hosts the annual National Firefighters Memorial (www.cfff.ca) to honour, remember and support the families of firefighters whose lives were lost in the line of duty.
The ride began on September 8 and will end in Ottawa at the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial on Friday, September 10th at 4:45pm. The riders had a goal to raise $50 000 for the CFFF. There are over 60 riders participating. Visit the TPFFCS facebook page to see the riders as they visit the different communities along their ride.
