NOTEBOOK: Richcraft will ask to defer barn decision; Dentists taking over antique shop

Richcraft is going to ask the city’s Built Heritage Sub-Committee to defer a decision on their demolition request for the Bradley-Craig barn.  The developer wants to dismantle and move the landmark building on Hazeldean Road to Saunder’s Farm in Munster, and the proposal is on the committee’s agenda for this Monday.  The committee will likely grant the deferral, and reschedule the item for December.


We finally know who’s taking over the other big red barn on Hazeldean Road.  The husband-wife dental team Dr. Cathy Deschênes and Dr. Michael Poitras are moving their practice from their current home on Stittsville Main Street.  They’ll open at the new location in mid-December.

Marc and Line Gendron ran an antique business out of the barn since 2002, and retired this fall.


Bistrofiftyfour, the restaurant at the Amberwood Village Golf & Country Club, has suspended its regular business hours until further notice. They will continue to be open for special events until December 15, and they’ll shut down completely until the spring.



  • What’s next for the Minto’s Potter’s Key development plans?  About 100 people packed a meeting hall at GRC on Wednesday night to offer feedback on the latest plan of subdivision.  Minto will now do another “final draft plan” to relocate  townhouses that back onto Overland Drive, and possibly add a recreation trial.  Councillor Qadri has also asked Minto to conduct another traffic study.  Meanwhile, residents who currently leave on the east and west side of the proposed subdivision plan to continue to share their concerns with the developer and councillor.
  • An updated site plan for the shopping plaza at the northwest corner of Carp Road and Hazeldean has been approved.  That paves the way for “a new athletic facility in one building and a restaurant, retail store or bank in the other.”  That athletic facility is likely to be a Goodlife.
  • The plan of subdivision for 173 Huntmar has also been approved, allowing for “the development of a mixed-use subdivision with residential and commercial uses, consisting of 13 low rise apartment buildings, 12 townhouses blocks and two four storey commercial buildings with retail on the ground floor and office uses above.”  It also includes the heritage Boyd House.

  1. I’m a little bit sad about this building becoming Dentist’s offices. Stittsville will soon have lost all of it’s places to “wander and shop” and instead have office buildings, Doctor’s and Dentist’s Buildings, law firms, etc. The big building on Main Street , beside Greco would have been great for a store, but instead, they want it to be another Doctor’s building. That makes 3! I thought that we had decided to keep the “village feel”, especially on Main Street, but I guess I am mistaken! Too bad!

    1. Joan – re: the medical building next to Greco – that was formerly a furniture store I think? And wasn’t it a grocery store before that?

      Two things that will help us get the right retail mix on Stittsville Main Street:
      1) The Stittsville Community Design Plan (CDP) that was approved this year. New zoning and guidelines will help give planners some more muscle to ensure the right kinds of businesses are approved.
      2) There’s also a push by Councillor Qadri for local business owners and property owners to start a Business Improvement Association (BIA) up and running in the next few months, which would be very valuable to help entice new shops and services to our area.

      I’m not 100% certain, but I think the dentists are only taking the top floor of this building, which would leave the bottom floor open to other tenants.
