At 7:40am Ottawa Fire Services dispatchers received a 911 call from a passerby reporting what appeared to be an abandoned barn on fire located on Fallowfield Road, just on the outskirts of Stittsville.
When firefighters arrived, a building with flames coming from the roof was discovered and a working fire was declared. Fallowfield Road has been closed in both directions, with Ottawa Police directing traffic.
There are multiple agricultural buildings at this location built very close to one another. Firefighters searched the buildings to confirm there was no one inside.
As this is a rural area with no fire hydrants, tanker vehicles were used to bring water to the scene in order to battle the flames.
After initially beginning to attack the flames from the inside an evacuation was ordered as the roof was at risk of collapse.
Firefighters have been able to prevent the fire from the two burning buildings from reaching the main two-storey barn.
The fire was declared under control at 9:25 a.m.
