SIU closes investigation into Stittsville collision

(Press release from the Ontario SIU.)

Based on the Special Investigations Unit’s (SIU) review of an incident that occurred in Ottawa earlier this month, SIU Director Tony Loparco has terminated the investigation.

The SIU review determined that at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2015, an officer was responding to a call with his emergency lights and siren activated. At the intersection of Hazeldean Road and Huntmar Drive, the officer’s cruiser was involved in a collision with another vehicle. The officer and the 52-year-old woman driver from the other vehicle were transported for treatment to the Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus. Due to the fact that medical reports revealed there was no evidence of serious injury in this case, the SIU investigation has been terminated.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
