Abigail Moffitt, an 11-year-old Stittsville singer, won $500 at a singing contest in Carleton Place on Saturday morning.

“Well, she was pretty thrilled,” said her mom Barb. “$500 cash is the most money she has ever had personally.  She really really wanted to win, but we prepared her for the fact that singing competitions are not based on fact. They can be subjective, and sometimes biased.”

The vocal competition was organized by the local farmers’ market to help bring more people to the weekly event.  Moffitt placed in the top two at a preliminary round in August, then competed against 17 other finalists on September 27.  Contestants ranged from kids to people in their 30s and older.  Winners were announced this past weekend.

Moffitt sang  Feeling Good (by Michael Buble), We Remain (by Christina Aguilera), and Blown Away (by Carrie Underwood) at the final.

Moffitt turns 12 this November and is in Grade 7 at Sacred Heart High School. She started vocal lessons with Cathy Hallessey last year.  She’s also a  competitive swimmer. Her first time performing was last June at Centrepointe Theatre. Her biggest fans (besides her mom) are her older brother Logan and younger sister Emma. You can watch her sing on Vimeo.
