EDITOR’S NOTE: We asked Aleisha Kerr, the Youth Director and Mentor at Youth Connexion & R.E.A.C.H., to tell us more about the organization’s programs in Stittsville. The group is currently working on a project to re-vamp their lounge. Kerr says there’s still a lot of work to do, but thanks to motivated students and donations from the community, it’s coming along.
Youth Connexion is a youth initiative through the Goulbourn and West Carleton Recreation Staff with City of Ottawa. It’s a FOR Youth BY Youth Program in Stittsville with weekly drop-ins and monthly events for all youth in grades 5+.
The Connexion Lounge is located at Pretty Street Community Centre in Stittsville. Teens meet with their friends, watch movies, hang out, tackle some DIY projects, and more!
We provide a light snack and refreshment. Drop-ins take place every Thursday from 3-6pm and the cost is $5 per visit. 100% of profits go towards Youth Connexion drop-ins & events.
Youth Connexion also offers a R.E.A.C.H program- Recreation Empowering Active Community Helpers. This is a program for high school students in grades 9-12 looking for community service hours. We meet weekly and work together to plan for community events. Most students earn 20-25 hours a month.
From September to December 2014 students planned for, and ran community Halloween & Christmas Parties (pictured above), participated in the Stittsville Parade of Lights, and are currently working on re-vamping the Connexion Lounge for our re-opening later this month. R.E.A.C.H is a fun way for students to get involved in their community and an easy way to earn community service hours!
