April news and events at the Goulbourn Museum

As Easter draws near, we’re hopeful for some stable weather! Though we didn’t quite manage to survive the March Break chaos, we’re excited to invite you to our Easter Spring Adventure on Saturday, April 19. The museum will be closed for most of the Easter weekend, but don’t miss out – be sure to register for this fun-filled event!

We recently held our inaugural Calm & Curious hours for Quiet Learning, and we’re thrilled to introduce this initiative as a monthly opportunity for sensory inclusion. We hope it becomes a valuable, safe space for the community on the first Saturday of every month.

You may have noticed that Hydro Ottawa’s partnership with Acme Adventures was short-lived. Although we’re always open to alternative transportation options to help more visitors access the museum, we’ve found that hydro lines may not be the best fit for a “drop-in” experience. If you missed the announcement, you can catch up on it here!

Wing It!
On April 4, we hosted a bird-tastic Family Craft Day in celebration of the Catholic School Board PA Day! Visitors of all ages flocked to the Museum to create their own birdhouses using recyclables – talk about nesting at its best!

The brave ones took it a step further, identifying bird silhouettes and collecting worms to feed our hungry bird trio on site. It was a day filled with creativity, fun, and plenty of worm-ing around! Thanks to everyone who joined in to make this egg-cellent day a success!

Goulbourn Museum Joins the Cleaning the Capital Program
We’re excited to be participating in the City of Ottawa’s Cleaning the Capital program, and we invite you to be our Partners in Grime as we get our site ready for the summer season! This outdoor event will involve tasks like raking, weeding, window washing, and sweeping. It’s a great way to give back to the community, and we’ll be happy to sign volunteer hours for school forms! Come lend a hand and help us spruce up the museum grounds on Saturday, April 26th, from 10am to 4pm. We can’t wait to see you there! Register Here

Easter Spring Adventure!
After conceding to the March Break chaos, we’re bouncing back and ready to bring some springtime magic to the Museum!

This April, come celebrate Easter through creativity, art, and a little bit of eco-friendly fun. Participants will get their hands dirty crafting seed bombs to help nature spring to life, weaving colorful yarn baskets that are perfect for Easter treats, and hopping along on a festive scavenger hunt throughout the Museum. Along the way, we’ll explore how art and sustainability come together to honour the season of renewal.

Our Family Craft Days are perfect for kids ages 4-11, with a parent or guardian required to join in on the fun. The cost is just $5 per participant, and pre-registration is required.

Please note, the Museum will be closed for the rest of the Easter weekend and will only be open during this event. Let your creativity bloom this Easter—hop on over and join us for a day full of fun! Register here.

Calm & Curious Hours for Quiet Learning
Goulbourn Museum introduced our Sensory Program on April 6, designed to provide a comfortable experience for visitors with sensory sensitivities. As part of the Ottawa Museum Network, we offer sensory bags with helpful items such as ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, and color communication cards. These are available in both child and adult sizes.

This month included a weaving activity, dimmed lighting, and quiet observation of the exhibits.

Join us for this program on the first Saturday of every month (with the exception of June), where everyone can enjoy a calm and welcoming atmosphere.

Thank You and Farewell!
We are excited to celebrate Jenna’s completion of her work placement at the Goulbourn Museum! Over the past few months, Jenna has shown incredible dedication and hard work, making valuable contributions to our team and museum projects. She has truly impressed us with her skills and positive attitude.

Jenna worked on many important tasks during her time with us. She helped with collections inventory, where she carefully documented and took photos of artefacts in our collection. Jenna also worked on cataloguing, entering detailed information into our collections database. Her photos, which will become part of our online collections, will help make Goulbourn’s story more accessible to the public.

We are proud of all the work Jenna has accomplished and are excited to see what she will do next in her career. We know she will continue to achieve great things, and we wish her the best in the future!
