August has arrived leading to the the bittersweet countdown to autumn and nature’s rich harvest – for the first week of August, Councillor Gower is informing residents of upcoming events and community news. The Stittsville Village Association are holding a Music and Movies in the Park. Para Transpo Talk has returned for August with six customer sessions being offered. There are a couple of road work events happening in August – road construction and the connection of underground city services. The Councillor has the Multicultural & Human Rights Calendar for August available on his website. On August 15, the Councillor would love to see the entire community come together to celebrate Olympic Gold medallist, Erica Wiebe. New three-stream waste bins could be coming to a park near you. Two minor updates are provided by the Councillor for development files. Ottawa’s Reuse Directory is coming and will provide an opportunity for small businesses or organizations to assist people in the recycling process. The Friendship Club has more than 300 members (mostly seniors) and provides activities, holds monthly luncheons and organizes excursions throughout the year. Saturday, August 8: SVA Music and Movies in the Park
Get ready for a magical summer evening at Music and Movies in the Park at Stittsville Village Square Park (6000 Abbott Street West, at Stittsville Main Street), hosted by the Stittsville Village Association. The event opens at 5:00 p.m. with a performance by The Jivewires. Formed in 1989, The Jivewires are a Canadian jump blues band inspired by the early R&B groups from the post-war period who created a musical style that incorporates social satire and jazz-blues improvisations. The movie starts at dusk and features a locally produced short film called Hold and Secure, followed by Mamma Mia! as the featured film. More info…
Para Transpo Talk sessions continue in August
Para Transpo Talk is back with six customer sessions throughout the month. All Para Transpo customers, their families, companions, and support persons are welcome to attend. Everyone is welcome, no matter how often you take Para Transpo. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly to OC Transpo staff, ask questions and provide feedback on Para Transpo service. Construction notices
- Hazeldean Road is being repaved between Edgewater Street and Kincardine Drive in Kanata. This work is expected to start on August 6 and be completed by September 30. Weekday and weekend work is anticipated, and there may be traffic interruptions including lane reductions, alternating lane traffic and/or detours. More info…
- Stittsville Main Street will be closed for through traffic between Warner-Colpitts Lane and Mulkins Street nightly until Tuesday, August 11. The overnight closures start at 9:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 a.m. The road will be open at all other times on weekdays and weekends. Pedestrian access along one sidewalk will be maintained at all times. Local traffic access will also be maintained. Detour is via Mulkins Street and Walter-Colpitts Lane (in front of Johnny Leroux Arena). More info…

AUGUST 15: Celebrating 10 Years of Olympic Gold with Erica Wiebe
On August 15, we invite the entire community to come together at the Erica Wiebe gymnasium at CARDELREC (1500 Shea Road) to celebrate her legacy, inspire the next generation of athletes, and enjoy a wonderful afternoon with neighbours, friends, and family. Cleaner parks, easier sorting
The City is adding three-stream waste bins to 48 parks across Ottawa this year, including several in Stittsville. The new waste stations include colour-coded recycling, organics and garbage bins, along with clear signs that make it easy to sort your waste, just like at home.
More parks will get three-stream bins over the next few years, with about 350 existing parks scheduled to receive them between 2026 and 2029 as part of the Parks Waste Diversion Strategy. New parks that meet the criteria will have three-stream waste bins from the start.
When waste is sorted and thrown away properly, parks stay cleaner, attract fewer pests and are more enjoyable for everyone. Please use the bins for waste from your visit. Your picnic scraps belong in the bins, not as a snack for local wildlife. Household waste still should be disposed of at home.

Stittsville Friendship Club
Every month, the Stittsville Friendship Club hosts a luncheon for its members at the Stittsville Legion. I dropped by last week to say hello and thank the volunteers who run this important organization.
The club was established in 1982 and now has more than 300 members, mostly seniors from Stittsville and the surrounding areas. Besides the monthly luncheon, they also organize activities like bridge, euchre, a book club, exercise classes, shuffleboard, and line dancing. They also organize excursions and trips around eastern Ontario, and support local charities.
New memberships cost $20/year and they welcome new members. You can learn more at stittsville-friendship-club.com.
