Deadline is quickly approaching to enter the Stittsville Goulbourn Horticulture Society photo contest

If you are an ardent photographer of plants and flowers, then this photo competition is for you! The Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society is seeking entries to their annual photo competition from members. The entry deadline is February 1, 2025. The contest is open to Horticultural Society members only, but you can become a member by registering at https://sites.google.com/site/sghortsoc/contact-us.

There are eight classes under which you can enter your photo with a caption to the competition including an extreme close-up of a single orange bloom – the colour of the year, flower boxes or containers, indoor house plants, vegetable or fruit display, find those pollinators, a fall display, a photo that is newsworthy and photos of any of the above captured during your travels.

The classes, judging criteria and rules for the 2025 photo competition are as follows:

  1. Class One – Showcase the colour orange! This is the colour of the year.
  2. Class Two – A container or any combination of containers including planter boxes displayed outside.
  3. Class Three – My Indoor Pride! House plants that you live with, please include identification.
  4. Class Four – Display of vegetables or fruit. Can be a farmer’s market stand, field or your garden. Keep Nature in mind.
  5. Class Five – Pollinators abound! Find your favourite. For example, bees, butterflies, wasps, dragonflies, moths, fireflies, hoverflies and so forth.
  6. Class Six – Find your fall flare at your door. Decorations, celebration of season, can include pumpkins, gourds, planted pots…. Your choice.
  7. Class Seven – John Curry Plaque. You can find material for this class at Seedy Saturday, Clean up the Capital, Plant Sales, Lee Boltwood Park. Horticultural Meetings to name a few. It should be a horticultural event held in Stittsville-Goulbourn which is newsworthy. Write a caption with each photo.
  8. Class 8 – Best in Show across all categories will win the Gillick Photographic Cup and $50.

Photos will be judged by Judy Fine on horticultural and photographic values as well as appearance and impact of the photo. All photo entries are to be submitted in digital format by February 1, 2025 to sghorticultural@gmail.com and include the caption Photo Contest Entry in the subject line.

The winners will be named at the Horticultural Society’s February 18, 2025 meeting at their new home, the Fringewood Community Centre located at 14 Fringewood Drive. The meeting begins at 7:30pm and the submitted photos will be shown at the meeting.
