SGHS Meeting: Going Grassless: Meadowscaping My Front Yard with Master Gardener Julianne Labreche

The next meeting of the Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society is on Tuesday, June 15th and will take place on Zoom at 7:00 pm.

This month’s speaker is Master Gardener Julianne Labreche who will be presenting her talk, “Going Grassless: Meadowscaping My Front Yard.”

Learn the “how’s and “why’s” of one local Ottawa master gardener’s decision to remove the turf grass from her front yard and transform it into a “meadowscape” for pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

Julianne will also discuss a brief history of the North American lawn, the costs, challenges and care of lawns, zone-appropriate plant alternatives to sod, and ideas and inspirations for how to create a grassless front garden.

Julianne Labreche has been a master gardener for over a decade and is a member of the Master Gardeners of Ottawa-Carleton. She is also certified as a Master Naturalist. Her nature and garden articles are published regularly for Lee Valley Tools. Julianne’s garden is certified with the Canadian Wildlife Federation and with Monarch Watch. She is a recipient of an Ontario Service Medal for her volunteer work. She loves to garden “on the wild side” with a focus on native plants, pollinators and birds.
