John Mlacak, a long-time community activist and artist in the Kanata area, passed away on Friday at age 78.

He was a former reeve of March township, has a recreation centre named after him in Kanata and continued to be very active in the community as an artist, volunteer and activist.  The Ottawa Citizen printed an obituary on him today, and you can see some of his artwork on his web site at www.johnmlacak.com.

I had the pleasure to talk with Mlacak last December when I was doing some research into the old house and barn at 173 Huntmar Drive in Stittsville.  He was commissioned to do a series of paintings of the house in 2010 and 2011 for the previous owners. He had hoped at one point to turn the property into an artists’ retreat.
