The City of Ottawa has received a proposal to name the future park located in the Haliburton Heights/Fernbank Crossing area of the Fernbank lands in honour of Mark Yakabuski. His extensive community service and the exceptional impact he had on the community of Stittsville over the years, where he was raised, was profound.
Mark played hockey with the Valley Titans, Ottawa 67’s and the Perth Blue Wings in the early 1990s. He became a fixture inside arenas across Ottawa, especially at the Johnny Leroux Community Centre on Warner-Colpitts Lane, where he spent many hours coaching and mentoring local players in the Stittsville Minor Hockey Association.
During his 42nd birthday, he was thrown from a golf cart and suffered a serious spinal injury. Despite the sudden and traumatic event, Mr. Yakabuski remained positive and upbeat, continuing to inspire young hockey players.
