Registration opens to Odyssey Theatre’s 2021 youth apprenticeship program

Calling all youth with a passion for theatre! For the duration of August, Ottawa’s Odyssey Theatre is running their Youth Apprenticeship Program.

The free, four-week program – which will run virtually on Zoom this year – is open to youth aged 15-19 looking to express their creativity and explore their theatrical talents. Odyssey Theatre will host 15 apprentices, who will have the opportunity to be mentored by professional theatre artists on a variety of theatrical roles and techniques. The apprentices will then showcase their talent through the staging of their own production to be viewed by Odyssey artists, friends, and family.

“The youth apprenticeship program is so important for students to develop their creative skills and explore their interest in theatre alongside professional artists. They will learn everything about creating live theatre through fun, engaging workshops,” said Odyssey’s Artistic Director Laurie Steven.

Through the undertaking of 12 workshops across the different aspects of theatre (performance, direction, design, etc.), youth will learn the ins-and-outs of running a theatre production from inception to performance. Over the course of the program, youth apprentices will receive feedback from professional artists, including Odyssey’s own professional actors and theatre director. Additionally, at the end of the program, apprentices will have the opportunity to speak with Odyssey professionals for advice on school and careers.

Odyssey Theatre is known across Ottawa for being a highlight of the summer theatre scene over the past 35 years through its program, Theatre Under the Stars, which takes place by the Rideau River in Strathcona Park. In the past, Odyssey Theatre has also put on performances at Stittsville’s Alexander Grove Park.

Previous Odyssey Theatre youth apprentices have gone on to have successful careers in the performing arts, including one former apprentice who was recently nominated for a Rideau Theatre Award. In previous years, several youth from Stittsville have participated in the program. In addition to these workshop and mentoring opportunities, Odyssey Theatre offers community volunteer hours, complimentary tickets to next summer’s production, and a letter of reference.

Odyssey’s Youth Apprentice Program runs online this August. Applications, and more information, is available on Odyssey Theatre’s website. Applications for the 2021 Youth Apprenticeship Program will be accepted starting June 1st and will be due June 18th.
