Stittsville’s Sean Stoqua is one of two recipients of this year’s 2015 Jim Wagdon Bell Warriors Scholarships. He’s studying kinesiology at Acadian University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and is hoping to finish his degree this fall.
Stoqua played just one season with the Warriors, and missed part of it due to a back injury. He started the season as a running back, then transitioned to defensive and wide receiver roles after the injury.
Last year, he was Atlantic University Sport’s nominee for the Russ Jackson Award, recognizing a Canadian university football player who excels on the field, in academics, and in community service. At Acadia, he was given the Rev. Rogers Prentice Axe Citizen award for his academic achievement and community involvement.
Off the football field, he coaches and plays basketball, he’s volunteered at Camp Triumph in Prince Edward Island, a camp for children whose siblings or parents have a chronic disease or disability.
“It was my year with the Bell Warriors in which I built the fundamentals, confidence, knowledge and passion for the game which have brought me thus far and will continue to push me to the next level. As a result, I am forever in debt to the Bell Warriors program and hope to give back in one way or another when I return to Ottawa,” he wrote in his scholarship application.
The Bell Warriors Football Club introduced their scholarship program in 1999. In total, $32,000 has been given to Warrior alumni to support their post-secondary program accomplishments. In 2012, the Bell Warriors renamed their scholarship program to honour over 20 years of service to the Warriors by their President at the time Jim Wagdin.
Since 1955, the Bell Warriors Football Club has offered football programs for boys and girls ages 8-16 in the communities of Britannia, Bayshore, Bells Corners, Richmond, Munster and Stittsville.
