Songwriter Howie Hooper at Gaia Java on May 8

Howie HooperHowie has walked his own path to being recognized as a crafter of song. Starting as a performing musician (bassist) in local bands in Ottawa at 13 years of age, he evolved into the role of songwriter many years later.

When asked why it took so long he happily will tell you that God gives everyone a gift, but leaves it up to them as when to open it. He gently blends the sounds and rhythms of new country with the traditional country music he grew up playing. Blessed with a deep countrified voice, and unique outlook, he is able to cultivate and deliver strong touching stories and memorable hooks, that hit you squarely in the chest.

A three time Tin Pan North Songwriters Festival performer, and finalist in the CanGig vocal competition performing his own material. After seeing the military repatriation processions on the 401, Howard penned Highway of Heroes, a moving tribute to those who made the stretch of road a unique Canadian testament. Howie’s Highway of Heroes Video soon followed and is available on youtube. Recently Howie delivered a SongCrafting course in association with Ottawa’s Bluesfest School Of Music. Currently he is recording his new CD “Past Due”.

Howie Hooper performs at Gaia Java at 7pm on Friday, May 8.
