The Starlight Novice team, representing the Goulbourn Skating Club, will travel to Waterloo, Ontario, February 22-24 to compete at the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Canadian Championships. This team is made up of 16 skaters, aged 11-14, and will be the first youth team from the Ottawa area to compete in the Novice category in over 15 years.
Skaters on this team have come together from skating clubs across the region, with a shared passion for the sport and the desire to compete on the national stage.
With coaches Lorraine Gouin and Lauren Brown, the team has practiced tirelessly all season to perfect their program. Skating to a medley of songs with a theme called “Modern Motown”, the team must skate technically difficult elements while showing musicality and artistry to engage the judges and audience.
Synchronized skating is a team based discipline of figure skating where a group of skaters performs elements in various shapes, adding intricate steps, turns and movements.
Community members can come out and watch the team as they practice, prior to leaving for their competition, at the GRC, Rink ‘A’ from 12:00 -1:00pm on February 21st. After their practice, the girls will be boarding the bus to head for Waterloo. Come out and cheer them on!
Congratulations and best wishes to the team as they attend the Canadian Championships!
