The Stittsville-Goulbourn Horticultural Society (SGHS) was founded in 1962 and is run by volunteers. The group holds many events throughout the year, including monthly meetings with guest speakers, and are always pleased to provide advice for your gardening qualms. Some members are Master Gardeners and are requested to speak across Ontario and Canada sharing their experience and expertise with various groups.
An event in which they annually participate is Glad’s Cleaning the Capital. This year, SGHS is asking residents to come out and lend a hand and also learn more about the organization. Meet-up is at 10:00am on Saturday, April 27th at Stittsville’s Village Square Park and SGHS will be supplying the tools required. It is recommended that you bring along a pair of garden gloves and wear appropriate footwear. This also presents the opportunity for high school students to receive the volunteer hours required – remember to bring your paperwork.
Tuesday, May 21st is the date for their next monthly meeting. If you want to learn more about the ‘Gardens of Ireland’, then do attend. Phil Reilly who, with his wife Carol, managed a very successful nursery in the Kinburn area will be speaking on this topic. The meeting will take place at the Pretty Street Community Centre starting at 7:30pm. Bring along a fellow gardener or friend – guests are Free.
The event that everyone looks forward to is the SGHS Annual Plant Sale. This year, the sale is being held on Saturday, May 25th from 9:00am – 1:00pm in the parking lot of Bradley’s Insurance on Main Street. If you have any plants, vegetables or herbs that you would like to donate to the sale, these are always gratefully received.
