Waste Management gets Environmental Compliance Approval for expanded landfill

Carp Road Landfill

Waste Management has passed one of the last regulatory hurdles required to move ahead with the expansion of the Carp Road landfill.

Ross Wallace, a company official, sent an email to stakeholders today to inform that that the Ministry of the Environment and Climiate Change has granted an Environmental Compliance Approval for the site.

It’s the last provincial approval needed for the landfill to proceed, but the company will still have to meet a number of municipal conditions before they can open the landfill.

Those conditions are set out in a Site Plan approved earlier this month, and include agreeing on a Host Municipal Responsibility Agreement (HMRA) with the City of Ottawa.  The HMRA will cover a number of topics including community compensation, service area, and property value protection.  It’s not yet clear if or how the public will be consulted on the HMRA.

More to come…
