COMMENT: Five places to enjoy the great outdoors on Thanksgiving Monday

As I sit down to write this it’s a very crisp (1°C) but bright Thanksgiving Monday. I hope you can take some time today to get outside for a run, a walk or a bike ride and enjoy one of the many trails we have close to us in Stittsville. (Bring your camera too – the fall colours are incredible.) Here are five of my favourite paths nearby.

  1. The Trans Canada Trail. You can jog out to the lookout east of West Ridge, and look for turtles and frogs in the marsh. Grab your bike and head east to Bells Corners, or west to Carleton Place (and beyond).
  2. The Poole Creek Pathway. Start at the Johnny Leroux Arena (you can see the sign for the pathway from Stittsville Main) and head west. The path follows the creek to Jonathan Pack Street, then you can take Stitt Street west and keep following the path to West Ridge.  (Check out “Following Poole Creek” for a guided tour.)
  3. Unofficial Dog Park.  Take your dog for a walk through the orchards and cedar forest south of Abbott Street and east of Shea. This is a popular spot for dogs and humans, although it is private property. Someday soon will be bulldozed for a new development so enjoy it while you can.
  4. Crazy Horse Trail in the Carp Hills.  Head a bit north of town to the intersection of Huntmar and March, and look for the trailhead. Volunteers from the area maintain this 6.5-kilometre walking path. You can find maps and more info here.
  5. Stony Swamp in the Greenbelt.  Really, any path in the Greenbelt will do but bring some birdseed to the Stony Swamp area and you’re all but guaranteed to have Black-Capped Chickadees  eating from your hand within a few minutes.  Try the Jack Pine Trail from parking lot #9 on Moodie, or the Lime Kiln Trail from Parking Lot #10.     Unfortunately there is no longer a marsh where you can see frogs and turtles from the lookout on the TC Trail west of West Ridge Dr.
