When Maria (Cheng Pei Pei; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) finds evidence that her husband Bing (Tzi Ma) may not be the perfect person she believes him to be she embarks on a journey of self-discovery by engaging with the world around her, something that her workaholic husband has always discouraged. Meditation Park is a charming and generous film, boasting fine performances by its leads and great support by McKellar, Liane Balaban (The Grand Seduction), and the phenomenal Sandra Oh as Maria’s daughter.

Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) oversees a bevy of up-and-coming female actors in this drama about aspiring nuns at an isolated Catholic school in 1964, who are forced to re-examine their faith and their calling in light of the liberal reforms of Vatican II. Unable to find her place at home or amongst her peers at school, Cathleen finds solace with the nuns at school and decides to turn to the Catholic Church to find meaning in her life. A coming of age story, this is a stirring exploration about women finding themselves, their faith, and their passions beyond religion.

This effervescent comedy from celebrated French directing duo Nakache & Toledano (The Intouchables) invites us to an opulent château to attend a très extravagant wedding, where the groom is an obnoxious tyrant, the band is at war with the organizers, and the chief planner is looking for the exit. An Altmanesque ensemble work brimming with offbeat, lovable characters, and hilarious set pieces, C’est la vie! Is a fiendishly smart, sprawling comedy as only the French do it. Sámi Blood TIFF Official Selection 2016
Amanda Kernell’s powerful feature debut follows a teenage Sámi girl (Lene Cecilia Sparrok) in the 1930s who is forcibly removed from her family and sent to a state boarding school that is intended to raise its Indigenous charges to a level “acceptable” to the rest of Swedish society. Sámi Blood has all of the anger and indignation one should expect from a dram centered on such appalling events. But with Kernell’s nuanced direction and Sparrok’s devastating performance, it’s also a brilliant character study, showing how this kind of officially sanctioned abuse insidiously attacks the minds of its victims as well as their bodies.

Tulipani, Love, Honour and a Bicycle World Premiere – TIFF 2017
A wonderfully woolly tale of rediscovering one’s roots, this film has more fantastic twists than its title has nouns. A young Montrealer arrives in a small Italian village to scatter her mother’s ashes, and finds herself embroiled in a bizarre series of family histories and feuds. Bursting with colour and romance and teeming with charming perfomances, this is a story about travelling far to know who you are, and about the joys and consolations of storytelling itself.
